A A Gai Waak / A Ji Hua / Project A 'A' Gai Waak / 'A' Jì Huà / Project A was not merely a breakthrough for Sing Lung / Chéng Lóng / Jackie Chan Jackie Chan / Sing Lung / Chéng Lóng -- it marked his transition from a kung-fu artist to a comedy-action star who did his own stunts -- but, along with its sequel, it is arguably one of the pinnacles of the modern Hong Kong cinema. Chan plays a coast guard officer in turn-of-the-century Hong Kong doing battle with the pirates who infest the South China Sea. Coming to his aid are Yuen Biao / Yuan Biao Yuen Biao / Yuán Biao, as a police official, and Sammo Hung Kam-Bo / Hong Jinbao Sammo Hung Kam-Bo / Hóng Jinbao3, as a good-hearted scoundrel. Most of the action takes place on land; the set pieces include a mad bicycle chase through narrow streets, and Chan's famous tribute to Harold Lloyd, in which he dangles from a giant clock, and plummets through two awnings. (Left-Cantonese/Right-Mandarin, No Subtitles). 118 Fen / Minutes VCD

1991 Leslie Cheung Kwok-Wing (Yuddy), Maggie Cheung Man-Yu / Zhang Man-Yu (Su Lizhen), Carina Lau Ka-Ling / Liu Jialing (Leung Fung-Ying), Andy Lau Tak-Wah/ Liu Dehua (Tide), Rebecca Pan (Rebecca), Jacky Cheung Hok-Yau (Zeb), Danilo Antunes (Rebecca's Lover), Hung Mei-Mei (The Amah), Tony Leung Chiu-Wai (Cameo). Cinematography by Christopher Doyle. Produced by Alan Tang. Written and Directed by Wong Kar-Wai. The film that launched Wong Kar-Wai as Hong Kong's leading art-house director has always been more popular with critics (it swept the Hong Kong Film Awards) than with audiences. Set in Hong Kong in the 1960s, it tells the story of a violent young man (Leslie Cheung Kwok-Wing), who romances and dumps a pair of women, before heading off for the Philippines in search of his birth mother. Andy Lau Tak-Wah / Liu Dehua plays a cop who befriends one of Cheung's castoff girlfriends; later on, as a sailor on leave, he meets up with Cheung in Manila. Days of Being Wild was meant to be the first of two parts, but because of the movie's financial failure, Part II, to have starred Tony Leung Chiu-Wai as a gambler, was never completed. 94 Fen / Minutes VCD (on order)

Sent to Hong Kong to bust up a crime syndicate, Yang is flung into a tailspin when she discovers the gang is headed by her ex-lover. Can Yang find a compromise between her heart and her honor? Performing her own fight sequences and stunts, Yeoh combines grace and fierceness to deliver an unforgettable wallop. Fellow stunt wizard and action superstar Jackie Chan contributes a memorable cameo appearance as his SUPERCOP character foiling a robbery while in drag. Director Stanley Tong Kwai-Lai / Tang Ji-Li Stanley Tong Kwai-Lai / Táng Jì-Li3 (STONE AGE WARRIORS) keeps the action hurtling forward with the unrestrained glee of a precociously able child on a joyride. Action Director Sammo Hung Kam-Bo / Hong Jinbao Sammo Hung Kam-Bo / Hóng Jinbao3. Cinematography by Christopher Doyle. Written by Louis Cha Liang-Yung (Novel) & Wong Kar-Wai. Produced by Tsai Sung-Lin. Directed by Wong Kar-Wai. This controversial art-house swashbuckler, peopled with characters from the classic Louis Cha Liang-Yung novel The Eagle Shooting Heroes, failed commercially, despite a cast that includes eight of the biggest stars of the Hong Kong cinema. Leslie Cheung Kwok-Wing plays a loner plays a loner who lines up work for assassins-for-hire; Tony Leung Ka-Fai is a young swordsman with a knack for making enemies; and Maggie Cheung Man-Yu / Zhang Man-Yu portrays the woman in the hearts of both men who sets the story in motion with her "wine of forgetfulness." Exquisitely photographed in the Yuli desert of mainland China, the film's narrative unfolds entirely out of sequence -- a device that many viewers find maddening. The movie won multiple awards from the Hong Kong Film Critics Society, including Best Picture of 1994, and picked up a Golden Horse for its cinematography. 100 Fen / Minutes VCD (on order)

Cradle 2 the Grave 2003.02.28 Jet Li (Yahoo! Site, Official Site, IMDB Site) is amazing as always -- the last old school, traditional, kung fu master.  Also starring DMX (Exit Wounds) and Mark Dacascos [Le Pact des Loups (The Brotherwood of the Wolf)].  Martial arts choreography by Corey Yuen [Eastern Condors (1986), Righting Wrongs (1986), Fong Sai Yuk (1993) aka The Legend, Fong Sai Yuk 2 (1993), Hero (1997), Kiss of the Dragon (2001), The Transporter (2002)].  Of course not the legendary masterpieces like Jet Li's Hong Kong films, but better than most of his other American movies.  Filmed on location at my favorite night club, Le Prive in Koreatown -- the most exclusive night club in Los Angeles ($300 a table, secret password to get in, not to mention the clientele!, but I digress).  Grade: B DVD
