Casablanca   The Godfather, Part II   Dr. Strangelove: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb   A Room with a View
Kurosawa Akira's Ran
In my humble opinion (and those of most movie aficionados regarding the first three), among the five greatest movies ever made: Casablanca, The Godfather Part II, Dr. Strangelove, A Room with a View, and Kurosawa Akira's Ran

List is still in the process of being updated. If you are looking for anything in particular, please let me know.   =)

Calvin’s Current Movie Recommendations:
Listed in reverse chronological order.

Someone commented and asked me, "You're too generous with your reviews.  Why are all your grades A's and B's?" Well, if they weren't, they wouldn't be on the recommended list, would they? i.e. C+'s through F's wouldn't make the list.

Before you other movie critics start e-mailing me saying, "What's with all the A's?," what can I say? I really like a lot of movies that have been released recently.  There are a few quality films out right now, which is good for a change.  Disagree?  Make your own movie review Web site.  ;-)

Syriana   November 23, 2005
Fictional movie loosely based on the non-fiction book See No Evil: The True Story of a Ground Soldier in the CIA's War on Terrorism by Robert Baer. Perhaps because I am a patriotic American, I have to unfortunately admit that this movie is historically accurate in that the C.I.A. has made mistakes in regime change: the unfortunate coup and murder of Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem under President John Fitzgerald "Jack" Kennedy; as well as targets missed: dictator Fidel Castro under Kennedy and Osama bin Laden under impeached former President William Jefferson Blythe "Slick Willie" "Bill" Clinton. Though there have been successes including: anti-communist President Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte (1915-2006), who overthrew Fidal Castro's communist buddy Salvador Allende on September 11, 1973 and established the strongest free market economy in Latin America that was the envy of not only Latin America, but also the rest of the world. Li Lian-Jie Jet Li Lian-Jie, Rosamund Kwan, Yuen Biao / Yuan Biao Yuen Biao / Yuán Biao, Kent Cheng, Jacky Cheung. Executive Producer Raymond Chow. Produced and Directed by Tsui Hark / Xu Ke Tsui Hark / Xu Ke. Jet Li Lian-Jie plays Wong Fei-Hung, a character based on a real Cantonese folk hero, and on the protagonist of a movie serial spanning about a hundred Hong Kong films from the 1940s through the 1970s. Here the martial-arts master takes control of the local militia in 1870s Canton (Guangzhou), to help fight off invading British powers and a group of Chinese bandits. This film singlehandedly revitalized the declining martial-arts genre, and made Li a superstar.

Cinematography by Christopher Doyle. Produced by Alan Tang. Written and Directed by Wong Kar-Wai. The film that launched Wong Kar-Wai as Hong Kong's leading art-house director has always been more popular with critics (it swept the Hong Kong Film Awards) than with audiences. Set in Hong Kong in the 1960s, it tells the story of a violent young man (Leslie Cheung Kwok-Wing), who romances and dumps a pair of women, before heading off for the Philippines in search of his birth mother. Andy Lau Tak-Wah / Liu Dehua plays a cop who befriends one of Cheung's castoff girlfriends; later on, as a sailor on leave, he meets up with Cheung in Manila. Days of Being Wild was meant to be the first of two parts, but because of the movie's financial failure, Part II, to have starred Tony Leung Chiu-Wai as a gambler, was never completed. 94 Fen / Minutes

A A Gai Waak / A Ji Hua / Project A 'A' Gai Waak / 'A' Jì Huà / Project A was not merely a breakthrough for Sing Lung / Chéng Lóng / Jackie Chan Jackie Chan / Sing Lung / Chéng Lóng -- it marked his transition from a kung-fu artist to a comedy-action star who did his own stunts -- but, along with its sequel, it is arguably one of the pinnacles of the modern Hong Kong cinema. Chan plays a coast guard officer in turn-of-the-century Hong Kong doing battle with the pirates who infest the South China Sea. Coming to his aid are Yuen Biao / Yuan Biao Yuen Biao / Yuán Biao, as a police official, and Sammo Hung Kam-Bo / Hong Jinbao Sammo Hung Kam-Bo / Hóng Jinbao3, as a good-hearted scoundrel. Most of the action takes place on land; the set pieces include a mad bicycle chase through narrow streets, and Chan's famous tribute to Harold Lloyd, in which he dangles from a giant clock, and plummets through two awnings. Jackie Chan's Hong Kong cop is teamed up with Michelle Yeoh's straitlaced police inspector from mainland China for an undercover assignment that lands them both inside a drug-smuggling gang, posing as brother and sister. They win the confidence of Panther, a high-ranking gang member, who brings them to Hong Kong to meet the boss; but their cover is blown in Malaysia by Chan's jealous girlfriend. For the climactic chase sequence, which involves a train and a helicopter, Chan and Yeoh both do their own life-threatening stunts. In the slightly cut American version, they also do their own English dubbing.
